Adoption of a child usually takes place in the following circumstances:

1. Joint adoption by natural parent and step-parent.

2. Adoption by relative of the child.

3. Adoption by private foster parents.

4. Adoption of a child in the care of a local authority or children's home.

5. Adoption of a child through an adoption agency.
